PROTECT YOUR MARRIAGE LIKE YOU PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY PROPER TRAINING COUNTERS THE STRAIN OF POLICE WORK ON MARRIAGE

By Caralee Frederic, LCSW

The heart of law enforcement is “to protect and serve” the community. To do this effectively, and handle a range of situations and risks well, extensive training is a necessity.

Yet few people, including those in police work – and other careers that require intensive training – invest the same kind of education mentality toward the most important part of their lives: their marriages.

A lack of relationship “training” can particularly compound divorce risks for police due to a number of job hazards, including:

– Rotating and long shifts,

– The intrusive nature of work demands into personal time

– A partner’s inherent worry about officer’s safety, and

– Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress.

Furthermore, many law enforcement officers, due to the nature of the job, develop characteristics such as pessimism, irritability, apathy and disconnect. This is, in part, due to the physical effects of being on a biological roller coaster of hypervigilance for safety at work and the let-down effect once off duty.

As a marriage therapist and wife of a veteran police officer, I know firsthand the way a law enforcement career can test relationships. Law enforcement families do not have the luxury of going down the rabbit holes of unproven, ineffective methods to strengthen their marriages and families.

Fortunately, a group of academics and marriage experts have applied solid research methods, including extensively studying more than 3,000 couples over a 40-year period, to develop a logical and effective training and educational workshop for couples.

The highly reputable Gottman Institute, which conducted the groundbreaking studies with couples, has presented the workshop, The Art and Science of Love, to tens of thousands of couples worldwide. I now present this two-day event in Colorado with a special sensitivity to the needs of the law enforcement community, including a targeted discount for law enforcement officer’s and their partners.
